Arthritis is an umbrella term for over 100 rheumatic conditions, which together provides the second most common cause of disability worldwide. The disability burden of arthritis is also rapidly escalating. Among adults in the United States, approximately 23% (54.4 million) report having a diagnosis of arthritis, and of these 44% (23.7 million) complain of arthritis-related physical activity limitations.
As a yoga teacher it’s very likely that you either already teach someone with arthritis or will teach someone with arthritis in the very near future.
It can be overwhelming to try to navigate all the conflicting information out there about this vast topic. Is physical activity, including yoga, safe for people who have arthritis? How can yoga teachers best offer support here?
During this 2-hour workshop we will:
· Explore the anatomy and physiology of our joints and how our joints change with age
· Understand the most common types of arthritis (osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis)
· Gain a contemporary, evidence-based understanding of how osteoarthritis develops
· Look at current treatment options for the main types of arthritis
· Discuss the current physical activity guidelines for people with arthritis
· Explore the research that looks at how yoga can impact arthritis
· Highlight top tips for teaching yoga to a student with arthritis
There will be time for Q&A.
The 200-page presentation will be available to download after the workshop.
The course is accredited by Yoga Alliance (US) and Yoga Alliance Professionals (UK).
The replay will also be available for 30 days for everyone who registers.
